ISO 7638 ABS and EBS Power Cables Explained
ISO 7638 is the dedicated trailer ABS and EBS power connector, with a 24 V and a 12 V variant. What each contact does, and why North American trailers use the J560 blue conductor instead.
ISO 7638 defines a dedicated electrical connector that supplies power and data to a trailer's antilock or electronic braking system, separately from the trailer's lighting circuits. It exists because braking electronics need a supply independent of the lighting harness, a defined warning-device signal back to the towing vehicle, and on the seven-contact version a CAN data link. North American trailers generally do not use it: here, ABS power travels on the blue conductor of the SAE J560 7-way trailer connector, which is why a US fleet buyer is far more often sourcing a 7-way ABS trailer cable than an ISO 7638 cable.
What the connector carries
ISO 7638 is published in two voltage variants: ISO 7638-1 for 24 V systems and ISO 7638-2 for 12 V systems. It is widely associated with European-specification trailers but is used internationally, so neither the voltage nor the contact count on its own identifies where a trailer was built.

"Heavy" and "light" here describe the relative duty of each pair. They are an explanatory comparison, not a cable-sizing specification — size conductors from the applicable standard and the manufacturer's drawing.
A five-contact variant exists without contacts 6 and 7. The functional distinction is exactly that: the five-contact arrangement carries power, ground and the warning-device connection but has no CAN pair, so it cannot carry the data link an electronic braking system uses.
Two design decisions worth understanding
Most ISO 7638 faults trace back to two features of that table.
First, supply and ground are each split into two separate conductors: a heavy pair for the electrovalves and a light pair for the electronics. The valves draw substantial current in short bursts when they modulate. Running that through the same thin conductor feeding the control electronics would drag the electronics' supply down at precisely the moment stability matters most. Separating them keeps the control side quiet.
Second, contact 5 is a control signal, not a power feed. It drives the warning device that tells the towing vehicle what the trailer's braking system thinks of itself. A trailer whose braking system is genuinely healthy but whose contact 5 circuit is open will still raise the warning, which is a frequent source of misdiagnosis.
Why North American trailers do it differently
The two markets solved the same problem in different ways. ISO 7638 adds a second, dedicated connector. North America reuses the existing 7-way trailer connector and assigns its blue conductor to ABS primary power, with red carrying ABS secondary power. The result is that a North American combination needs one electrical connector where an ISO 7638 installation needs two.

That last row matters for anyone maintaining North American trailers. Because the ABS shares the J560 white ground with every lamp on the trailer, a corroded ground terminal can present as an ABS fault, a lighting fault, or both, depending on what else is switched on. With ISO 7638 the braking grounds are its own, so the two failure modes stay separate.
When a US operation encounters ISO 7638
More often than the market split suggests. Fleets running imported trailers, operators of specialised equipment on European-built chassis, and anyone maintaining a mixed fleet will meet the connector. It also turns up in technical documentation written for other markets, which is a frequent source of confusion when a technician tries to apply an ISO 7638 pin-out to a North American 7-way socket. The two are not interchangeable, electrically or mechanically, and no adapter makes an ISO 7638 arrangement equivalent to a J560 blue conductor.
If you are working from a wiring diagram, confirm which standard it was drawn to before probing anything. A diagram showing separate electrovalve and electronics grounds is ISO 7638. A diagram showing a single white ground shared by lamps and ABS is J560.
