IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3: What They Mean for Fleet Buyers
IATF 16949 certifies an automotive quality management system; VDA 6.3 audits the manufacturing process itself. What each one actually tells a parts buyer, and what to ask for.
IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3 answer two different questions about a supplier. IATF 16949 is an automotive quality management system standard, used together with ISO 9001, and certification to it says the supplier operates a documented, independently audited quality system. VDA 6.3 is a process audit methodology from the German automotive industry association, and it assesses how a specific manufacturing process actually runs. The first tells you the system exists and is maintained; the second tells you a process was examined in operation. Neither is a statement about any individual part, which is the distinction most procurement checklists miss.
What IATF 16949 covers
IATF 16949 is a sector-specific automotive standard applied together with ISO 9001 rather than instead of it. Its subject is the management system: how the supplier controls documents and changes, qualifies and monitors its own suppliers, handles nonconformities and corrective action, manages product safety and traceability, and maintains competence and measurement capability.
Certification is granted by an IATF-recognized certification body after audit, and maintained across a certification cycle that includes surveillance and recertification audits. The wording matters when you verify a certificate: recognition within the IATF scheme is the relevant status, and the IATF publishes the list of bodies under contract, so a certificate can be checked against it.
The practical value to a buyer is traceability and recourse. When something goes wrong, a certified supplier is required to have the records that establish what was made when, from what material, on which process, and what was done about it.
What VDA 6.3 covers
VDA 6.3 is a process audit, currently published as VDA 6.3:2023. Where a management system audit asks whether procedures exist and are followed, a process audit examines the production process itself. Its framework runs across process elements P1 to P7, spanning the product and process lifecycle from development through supplier management, production and customer-related activities. Results are scored, producing a rating and an overall classification rather than a pass or fail, and auditors have to meet defined competence requirements.
That structure is the important nuance for a buyer. VDA 6.3 describes an audit a process undergoes, not a certification a company holds the way it holds an ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 certificate — and an individual auditor's qualification is a separate thing again from an organisation's audit result. When a supplier refers to VDA 6.3, the useful follow-up is to ask what was audited, when, by whom, and what the resulting rating was, rather than to ask for a certificate number.

What certification does not tell you
A certificate covers a defined scope: named sites, named activities. It does not automatically extend to every plant a group operates, to a subcontracted process, or to a product line added after the audit. It also says nothing directly about whether a given part meets a given specification. That remains a product question, answered by the part's specification, its test evidence and its approval status for your application.
For a fleet buyer, the sensible use of these standards is as a filter, not a conclusion. They tell you a supplier operates at automotive discipline. They do not replace confirming that the specific part number fits and complies.

Where Sertplas stands
Manufacturing is IATF 16949 certified. Tier-1 status is worth understanding on its own terms. A Tier-1 supplier supplies a vehicle manufacturer directly, which means its processes, documentation and change control have been assessed by that manufacturer against requirements that are typically stricter than the baseline standard. That is a meaningful signal about process discipline, and it is still not a substitute for confirming the specification of the part you are buying.
